Every year, National Geographic awards funding to innovative scientists, conservationists, educators and storytellers who are changing the world by contributing to better understandings of our planet.
DPhil student Lisa Briggs, who researches long distance maritime trade in the ancient world, has been named a 2019 National Geographic Explorer. Her successfully funded Exploration Grant will enable her to conduct more work on the DNA that can be recovered from ancient shipwrecks, providing insight into early commercial endeavours and maritime trade.
